Summary
Be it a sandstone canyon on Southwestern Arizona, a tropical storm in Hawaii, a tornado in Oklahoma or a frying pan in his kitchen, variety is what inspires, challenges and ultimately teaches Tom Stubbs. He paints and studies on location: learning from nature and living his art.Often, Tom puts on a pair of running shoes and heads out to the same mountain passes, narrow canyons and high deserts he loves to paint. You might find him mountain biking a rocky trail or climbing a sheer rock cliff, seeking hands-on inspiration. Tom forms a more intimate relationship with the subject of his art by being active in the very landscapes he paints.
Back at his studio, he uses the small "plein air" paintings (field studies) as references for his larger, refined studio paintings. He applies to his canvases what nature has given him: shifting forms and their relationship, movement from shadow to light, edges of color, butting here and blending softly there--transitions of warmth into coolness and back again. To each subject he applies the same elements of movement, continuity, balance and variety. Tom carefully places into each of his works his "necessary elements" of good landscape painting which he has spent 22 years acquiring through study and the help of Daniel Sprick, Wilson Hurley, and other artists.
