Plein Air paintings is another term for "field studies" or "on location" paintings. Tom takes a portable easel with him on location to capture the exactness of the colors and the feeling of the scenes which is only possible on location. Tom's Plein Air paintings are small oils painted entirely on location in about 4 hours. Therefore, they are somewhat less detailed than his studio paintings, but also much less expensive to purchase. Many people find the Plein Air paintings a great way to own an original oil by Tom for less than $800.
Prints are a reproductions of an original oil painting, pastel drawing, watercolor, etc. They are similar to a poster, but made from much thicker, high quality paper. Prints are usually framed like most artwork, but in addition are also matted.
Limited Edition Prints (LTD Ed.) are those which have only one edition or printing. By law, no more can be produced. There can be any number of copies made (the size of the edition), but some common ones are 200, 500, and 800. The smaller the edition size, the more valuable the prints become. That's why our Lake Powell prints (LTD Ed. of 200) are more expensive than the other two (LTD Ed. of 800). Limited Edition prints are the most valuable! All of Tom's prints are Limited Edition.
Numbered Editions are those which have multiple editions or printings. For example, 1st Edition, 2nd Edition, 3rd Edition, etc. With these types of prints, the earlier editions (1st, 2nd) are more valuable than later ones. More editions can be made without limit. Numbered Editions are less valuable than Limited Editions.
Artist Proofs are prints from the same edition. However, artists can preview all of the prints and select the best ones as their proofs. This is like getting the "pick of the litter". Therefore, artist proofs are considered very valuable. Once the artist proofs are removed from the edition, they are normally numbered consecutively and signed by the artist. The artist can choose how many proofs there will be, but commonly there are 20-30 artist proofs. We do offer artist proofs of Tom's prints, but currently only offer them as a set of all three. However, we can ensure that all three have the same proof number, which is impossible for the other prints. The set of all three artist proofs is available on the order form, simply click on "Purchase"
Numbered Prints means that each print is assigned a number which is written on the print itself. For example, a print may be numbered 78, which means it was the 78th print in the edition. Some people feel the lower numbered prints are more valuable because sometimes the quality is slightly better on the first ones printed from the master. Not all editions are numbered and this is the choice of the artist. All of Tom's prints are numbered.
Signed Prints are those which the artist signs by hand after the print has been made. Some artists don't like having to sign hundreds of prints and therefore not all editions are signed, but instead the signature is from the original. All of Tom's prints are signed.
In Summary: All of Tom's prints are Limited Edition, Signed and Numbered.
Artist Tips from Tom: Tom's advice this month is for Plein Air painters: "Before you swat a bug on your neck, first check to make sure you don't have a huge glob of paint on your hand...or take along an extra rag so you don't end up tearing the shirt off you back into pieces to clean up afterwards...particularly if it's cold outside!"
